Erin Mison
Erin Mison’s work draws on an evolving and life long desire to understand people. The self-taught artist works predominantly with textiles, using hand operated tufting guns with both natural and synthetic yarn to create ornamental tapestries. Mison’s work explores themes of identity curation, sexuality and socio-cultural anthropology, taking universal, familiar yet private stories and re-telling them in evocative pieces. What began as an introspective analysis of her own seemingly unique and private stories soon shifted towards a focus on illuminating the similarities they had with others. Mison’s work reflects the artist’s desire to connect with the viewer, whether by the tactile nature of her pieces, or the feelings of comfort/ discomfort that come from seeing parts of themselves in her works. Her current work is deeply influenced by the Mannerism period of art history, both in subject and style.
Her work has been shown in numerous group shows on the South Coast of NSW, including the Wollongong Art Gallery. Mison is currently represented by contemporary art gallery Egg and Dart, Wollongong. In 2022 Mison had her first solo exhibition, A Comprehensive Guide to Chicken Lips at Brunswick Street Gallery, Melbourne, and will exhibit another solo exhibition, Swimming in Strange Waters in August, 2023. Mison lives and works from her home in Mount Keira, NSW. Graduating with an Honors Degree in Psychology from the University of Wollongong in 2016, Mison is a PhD candidate within the field of psychotic experience, schizotypy and adverse childhood experiences. Working with numerous NSW based universities including the University of Wollongong and Western Sydney University, Mison currently works as a researcher, lecturer and academic.
